Diabetes and Covid-19

Diabetes and Covid-19 2020! So far it hasn't been the year everyone had expected. Lots has happened and we have all had to adjust to new changes. With Corona Virus, many people have had to change the way they do their work and live their life. Luckily in England we have the amazing NHS who are helping us. How is Covid-19 different for me? For me the biggest change is sport. I am still able to go for a run on the treadmill and play football in the garden but it isn't the same as playing a full 60 minute football game. Education I am currently in my first year of high school and half way through the year we have had to start doing school work at home. It has been a huge change for everyone. We do manage to get a walk in most days at lunchtime. During quarantine me and my family have each started running. Me and my dad go outside (while keeping a safe distance from anyone we see) and run 3 miles. My mum and brother go on the treadmill. I decided to go on a run o

Sports with Type 1

On the day I was diagnosed, my first and main question was how soon can I play sport? For me doing sport (especially football) felt like a necessity. Two days after diagnosis I had a football game so not playing was not an option. Before I was diagnosed my school team and I got through to the final of a tournament. The final wasn't being played where the rest of the tournament was. It was being played at Morecambe FC's Globe arena. I was relieved when I heard Paul (the dietician) say the most amazing words. "Of course you can play." That was the best thing anyone had said to me all day. So after getting more used to type 1, the day arrived. The day I had been waiting for. The day I was playing in the final of the first stage of the Utilita girls cup. We were playing at half time of the Morecambe vs Carlisle game. After watching the first half of the game, the time arrived. The time to play against Ripley in the final. We warmed up ready to get the game started.

It all began with a cold that made me feel weak and tired. This cold lasted for about a week which made it harder for me to do sports when I struggled to breathe when running. So that was the start of it. Then things didn't get any better. I started to lose more weight without trying. Then other symptoms of type 1 diabetes started to occur. I went to the toilet a lot, got extremely tired and became really thirsty. Then after a couple of weeks, things started improving. I was able to do sport easier, but everything still wasn't back to normal. I was still tired and thirsty. So that is when I decided to do something about it. On Wednesday the 4th of December I mentioned to my mum about all the symptoms so she decided it was a good idea to test my blood sugars. We were able to do this because my dad is diabet
